Rigorous Black Scholarship. Accessible to Everyone.

Founded by Professor Darius Spearman, Professor of Black Studies at San Diego City College, African Elements bridges the gap between university scholarship and daily public understanding.

Our Mission: Where the Past Explains the Present

Welcome to African Elements! I’m Darius Spearman, Professor of Black Studies at San Diego City College, where I have been teaching since 2007. In a media landscape where misinformation is common and headlines are stripped of their historical roots, African Elements stands out by sticking to the facts and delivering analysis backed by primary sources and peer-reviewed scholarship.

From pre-colonial African sovereignty and the Reconstruction era to modern civil rights battles, our documentary video essays, daily news coverage, and textbooks are designed to educate, inspire, and equip students, educators, and lifelong learners with the truth.
