About

Black Studies Word Cloud

Darius Spearman has been a professor of African American history, Black Culture, and the African Diaspora for over 20 years. He began his teaching career in 1999, and since then has taught courses in American Culture, Race, Gender, & Ethnicity, Civic Engagement, The Black Family, and African American History. As a career educator his goal is to create accessible curriculum resources on Black Americans for students and teachers of African American History to foster opportunity in education.

Professor Spearman joined the Department of Black Studies at San Diego City College in 2007. There, he developed curriculum for online courses in African American History and Culture. In 2012, he earned recognition for “Exemplary Online Instruction.” Darius put together this collection of teaching resources in response to the recent shift toward online instruction to make the history of Black people and people of African descent more accessible. The curriculum resources emphasize African American history and Black experiences from their African ancestry to the Black Lives Matter movement along with other contemporary issues facing Black communities and people of color.
Darius is the Author of Between the Color Lines: A History of African Americans on the California Frontier from 1769 through 1890.  He published several volumes on the life histories of communities of color in Southeast San Diego along with teacher resources for students in grades 9 through college in a series of publications entitled, Reclaiming Our Stories.
