June 7, 2015
Elbert “Big Man” Howard is one of the original six members of the Black Panther Party when it was founded in Oakland, CA in 1966. He was the first editor of the Black Panther Party Newspaper and was one of the negotiators during the Attica Prison uprising in 1971. In this conversation, Elbert “Big” Man Howard speaks on his experience with the Black Panther Party’s many community programs as well as the role of the FBI’s counterintelligence program (COINTELPRO) in the demise of the organization. In conversation, we address questions such as: How do we build solidarity between Black and Brown communities? What advice to you have for community organizers today? How do vulnerable communities already living in fear find their voice?
