Scottsdale’s New Social Studies Curriculum

The Scottsdale Unified School District (SUSD) has found itself in the eye of a storm. A new social studies curriculum, which includes material on the Black Lives Matter movement, recent police incidents, and NFL players kneeling in protest, received board approval (AZ Superintendent, PD call out Scottsdale Unified over controversial curriculum). This decision, made by a 3-2 vote of the school board in May 2025, sparked heated debates. Many parents, educators, and law enforcement officials voiced strong opinions. Law enforcement officials also weighed in with significant apprehension. Black Lives Matter in Education

The Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement sits at the very heart of this SUSD curriculum debate. For those outside the Black community, understanding its roots is crucial. BLM is an international social movement founded in 2013 by three Black organizers: Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi (The Black Lives Matter Movement – A Brief History of Civil Rights in America). This powerful movement emerged in direct response to the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the killing of Trayvon Martin. The movement began as a hashtag and truly gained momentum as a grassroots effort after Zimmerman’s acquittal in 2013, with the founding of #BlackLivesMatter (Our History – Black Lives Matter). This pivotal moment inspired local chapters across America, building a broader network focused on ending state-sanctioned violence against Black people (Our History – Black Lives Matter). BLM’s official history emphasizes building Black-centered political power, supporting new Black leaders, and empowering Black communities to determine their own destinies (About Black Lives Matter). Ultimately, for many within the diaspora, it represents a continued fight for basic human rights and dignity.

Echoes of Protest: George Floyd and Colin Kaepernick

The curriculum’s inclusion of “recent police incidents” and “NFL players kneeling in protest” directly brings to mind two defining moments for the Black community. George Floyd’s senseless death on May 25, 2020, at the hands of Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, sparked global outrage. This tragic event, caused by Chauvin kneeling on Floyd’s neck for over nine minutes, reignited calls for justice.

His death became a powerful symbol of police violence against Black Americans, accelerating national and international debates about police accountability and the role of law enforcement in marginalized communities. Similarly, Colin Kaepernick, a former NFL quarterback, initiated his kneeling protest during the national anthem in 2016. He did this to protest racial inequality and police brutality in the United States. Kaepernick’s protest generated immense public debate. Furthermore, his actions inspired athletes everywhere to take a stand on social justice issues, amplifying the message of racial equality and police accountability.

The Role of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

The controversy in Scottsdale also touches on the broader concept of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). DEI statements are official commitments by institutions to foster environments that respect diversity, promote equity, and ensure inclusion for all, particularly marginalized groups. In an educational setting, DEI initiatives often involve curricula and policies designed to address systemic inequalities that impact race, gender, disability, and many other aspects of identity.

The Black Lives Matter movement’s guiding principles inherently align with DEI, as they focus on building inclusive and supportive spaces. For many, DEI initiatives are essential for correcting historical injustices and improving outcomes for underrepresented groups. However, some critics argue that DEI initiatives may violate principles of neutrality or promote divisiveness.
